PC Problems I Have Resolved

Welcome to my rambling blog about problems I have solved. This is an experiment but the purpose is for me to record the fixes I have used to resolve computer problems. I frequently find problems that I have come across before but couldn't remember how I resolved them! As of now (November 2011) I will try to be disciplined and record them here.

This is really for my benefit so don't expect screenshots or step-by-step guides! I just want somewhere that I can look for previous solutions. Also, don't expect to see all the steps that I took to eliminate the more usual and/or obvious answers (you can assume I tried these!). There will always be more than one way to fix something and some fixes wont work in all circumstances but remember: this is MY blog for MY benefit! If you find anything useful in this or you have any comment/improvement then please contribute using the comments form!

Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network.

You may get this message when attempting to connect to a WiFi network. Here's what to do:

1. First, click on the wireless icon in your taskbar and under Related Tasks, choose Change advanced settings.
2. Now click on the Wireless Networks tab and select the network in the list at the bottom. Click onProperties once you select the wireless network that is having problems.
3. Click on the Authentication tab and now uncheck the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network box. 
4. If the box was checked, then that was why you were getting the "unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network" message because Windows is looking for one, but your wireless router is not setup for certificate security.

Problem: Access won't open because of "side by side configuration".

Answer: EventViewer indicated a conflict with Visual C++ Redistribution Package 2008. There were two instances of this in Windows Programs. I uninstalled them both and redownloaded them from MS and installed the update.
