Why has my computer started to run so slowly? Ian, Sax.
Ian was running Windows XP and his problem is very common for any of us using XP. There are many reasons why a computer should start running slower than normal. Here are the most usual with possible cures in brackets. Please do not attempt anything that you are not comfortable with (particularly those in italics) and create a System Restore Point before you start:
Virus or Spyware (Install and Run Anti-Virus Software)
Fragmented Disk (Run the Windows defragment tool)
Full Disk (Delete unneeded files - backup if necessary)
Too Many Processes (Disable any programs that automatically start when the computer starts).
Hard Disk Faults (run chkdsk / scandisk)
Overheating Processor (Advanced: Open the case and examine the processor: the fan might just need a clean)
Bad RAM Memory (Advanced: Run a diagnostic program)
BIOS Settings (Advanced: Check and update if necessary)
Programs ‘Hogging” the Processor (Advanced: Identify in Task Manager and stop using to see if it improves performance).
