At the end of every Newsletter I ask for comments and suggestions and I'd like to say "thank you" to those of you that do. I have extended this to allow for comments on my web pages. Each page has a button at the bottom that will allow you to add your comments. There is no need to register and you can write anonymously (no name or email address required) or you can include your name, email and website). Comments will also appear at the bottom.
One of the reasons I've done this is based on experience from the Forum that I moderate on The Inland Magazine web site. Readers are able to pass on their knowledge gained through experience and correct errors and/or update information in the ever-changing world of IT. My site has been running for a few years now and I'm sure that many of my articles are out of date and therefore inaccurate. This will allow me to keep the information current (and accurate) so please feel free to use this.
For some time now I've had problems with Skype™: people couldn't hear me (insert your own joke here!). Because I'm not a regular user of Skype I put the problem on the back burner and promised myself I'd fix it soon. I was prompted to finally fix it when I received a call from a client with a similar problem. In talking him through the problem over the phone I spotted the error in my setup. I thought I would pass on what I learned via this Newsletter.
The details can be found here: How To Setup Your Audio Equipment.
I first discussed this in October 2007 and again in February 2008 so here is your reminder for 2009! I make no apologies for repeating myself not least because for some of you this is the first time I've mentioned it. Just like the audio problem mentioned earlier, this is prompted by a client who had a problem following a recent thunderstorm. It turned out that the Network card in the computer (in this case it was integrated into the motherboard) failed. The most likely cause was a lightning strike on the telephone cables in the street that passed through the router to the computer. In this case the fix was to install a Network card at a cost of 10 Euros but it could have been a lot worse.
Please read the October 07 newsletter for more details about what a UPS and why you need it.
A good surge protector or, better still, UPS protects not only from electrical surges through the power but also via the phone and/or network cables. Here in Spain I consider this to be almost essential due to problems we all experience with the power.
For the remainder of June and all of July I am offering a 15% discount on UPS and Power Surge equipment. The recommended option is a UPS that will protect your computer, monitor and router that I normally sell for 73.30 Euros, this will be available at 62.30 Euros including IVA. Other equipment connected to the UPS will benefit from the voltage control and surge protection.
Similarly, the Power Surge protector (including telephone / network cable protection) will be available for 19.89 Euros instead of 23.40 Euros including IVA. To receive the discount simply order during June / July and quote this Newsletter.
These prices are based on collection from Sax. Delivery & Installation will be charged at the usual rates.
As always, I encourage anyone with a comment, suggestion, question, idea or inspiration to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
