I always recommend that my clients use a login password for their Windows XP Computers but sometimes, even though a password has been set, the computer bypasses the login screen without asking for the password!
This only seems to happen from a 'cold' start: if the client logs out of their session or comes back from standby they will be asked for the password before logging back in. All the settings in the User Control panel (Start --> Control panel --> Double click User Accounts and tick "Use the welcome screen") are set correctly i.e. Windows is supposed to ask for the password but it just doesn't!
Here's how you fix it:
Open a Run Command (click Start then Run) and type "control userpasswords2" then hit Enter or press OK
On the User accounts Click on Users and tick this box: "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
