Last month I answered a question about how to check that your computer is safe and secure. I gave you a few tools that would try to ‘break’ your security. Even if you passed all those tests your computer is still vulnerable to attack, so, what can you do to minimise the risk?
- Install Anti-Virus Software. I am no longer convinced that you should buy anti-virus software! You should choose from the free software that is available. I use Comodo but there are others that are just as good, such as AVG and Avira.
- Install Anti-spyware/adware Software. If your chosen anti-virus doesn’t include this, then I recommend Microsoft Defender or Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free.
- Install a Firewall. Most of us access the Internet through a router which has a built-in firewall. I believe you should also have a Firewall program installed. The built in Firewall with Windows 7 / Vista is OK but XP isn’t. I recommend Comodo or ZoneAlarm. Both are free.
- Scan for Viruses. As well as running anti-virus software in the background you should also, periodically, run a separate scan. I recommend MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Guess what? This is also free!
- Update Windows. This is essential!
- Change your router’s password. This is normally set to the default such as ‘password’, ‘admin’ or 1234!! Yes, really! Change it!
- Add a Windows Password. 70% of my clients don’t have a Windows User Password.
- Update your software. Software can have security holes. Update it!
- Backup Your Data. There are two types of computer user: those that have lost data and those that WILL lose data - keep a copy!
