I use CNET's Tech Tracker to keep my software uptodate. It works in the background and alerts you when your software is out-of-date.

Out-of-date software is a security risk because most updates address security holes that have been found after the sofware was released.

Tech Tracker notifies as soon as there is a problem so you don't have to wait to start the program to find out. Often, when you start a program and it tells you that you should update you haven't the time. This is the moment the bad guys get in. By keeping your software up-to-date you are keeping your computer safe. Oh, and it is FREE!

During the install process you may be asked to install the Babylon toolbar for your browser. This is not necessary and can be skipped (un-tick the box).
