Microsoft have made available their MS Baseline Security Analyzer. It checks your system not just for any missing updates but also for common configuration problems. Download and run the program and it will give your system an MOT and tell you what you need to do to make it more secure. Download it from here.

Most users will download the "x86" version. You will only need to download the "x64" version if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't know then you are 99.9% certain to be needing the bottom version.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0 is an easy-to-use tool that helps determine your security state in accordance with Microsoft security recommendations and offers specific remediation guidance. Improve your security management process by using MBSA to detect common security misconfigurations and missing security updates on your computer systems.

When the program has checked your system it produces a report similar to the one below and includes guidance on how to fix your problems.
