Meta Keywords are part of a web page that is not seen by users but is used by Search Engines to understand what the page is about. Although they are not as important as they used to be, they can still be useful. So, what should you do?
- First read the article How to get better search results to see how people search!
- Only use words that are relevant to your page.
- Use around 20 or so key words.
- You should separate words/phrases by a comma. E.g. food, new york, drink will prioritise results for Food in New York rather than New Food in York for example.
- Don't repeat words.
- Put your important key words first in the list.
- Your page content needs to be about one topic rather than many if you want good ranking for the one topic. Your keywords will follow from this.
- Don't forget to edit your Meta Description: this is the page description that appears in the search results and will encourage clicks (or not!).
- Each page should have its own, specific and relevant keywords.
It makes sense to get your meta data correct but don't obsess over it!
Remember: Content is King!
