Term Definition
dialogue box

A window that appears on the screen typically to reguest information or instructions.

driver

Software needed to allow Windows (and other operating systems) to communicate with a peripheral.

MB

MegaByte. A little over 1 million Bytes. A Byte is the smallest amount of storage needed for a single character. 1 Byte is 8 bits. Don't confuse 1MB (megabyte) with 1Mb (megabit). I bit is the smallest amount of storage and can only contain either '0' or '1'.

operating system

A series of computer programs which control the operation of the computer itself. Examples of operating systems include MS Windows 95, MS Windows NT, MS Windows Vista, MS Windows 7, Linux, Apple Mac, UNIX, VMS, DOS and OS/2.

ports

Computers and routers automatically manage network traffic traveling via their virtual ports. Network firewalls additionally provide some control over the flow of traffic on each virtual port for security purposes.

print screen key

An under-used key on your keyboard usually found on the top row towards the right. Pressing this appears to do nothing but in fact stores a copy of the screen in the clipboard. You can simply paste this into Windows Paint, Word or similar programs. Holding down the Alt key when pressing the key copies the live window but not the background.

printer control program

A program that allows you to control and maintain your printer. To access this open the Windows Control Panel (click start then control panel) and double click "printers and faxes". Now right click the printer icon and choose "properties". Where you go from here varies from printer to printer but you should be looking for a Maintenance tab or button (possibly under "printer preferences").

UPS

Uninterruptible Power Supply. A device that sits between a computer and the power supply to protect the computer from power surges and power cuts. It regulates the input to provide the computer with a smooth supply. Some can be configured to automatically close down the computer after the power has been disconnected for a period of time.
